Sceptres Fall Short in Electric Home Opener Against Boston Fleet

On Saturday, the Sceptres kicked off the second week of the season at home in Toronto.  8277 fans gathered into the Coca-Cola coliseum to watch the Toronto Sceptres face off against the Boston Fleet.

As the audience waved their home opener rally towels to show their support, the energy in the arena was electric. When the first period began, the hockey was everything that we expected- fast, physical, strong, and focused. Seeing players like Spooner and Turnbull on the ice, while their names were plastered on the jerseys of fans around the coliseum was inspiring.

About six minutes into the period, the Sceptres’ captain Blayre Turnbull scored the first goal of game. The fans roared. Boston came back strong in the second period, showing their unwillingness to back down. Abby Newhook scored in the 14th minute of the second period for the Fleet.

My section of the arena was filled with young hockey girls, all sporting jerseys from the teams they play on. Their enthusiasm was unmatched. They waved their flags, cheered and danced, while eating hotdogs and drinking soda. Their goal was clear: make it on the jumbotron and start the wave (both of which I was a supporter of). With an undying love for the team on the ice, it showed how important this league is to young female athletes.

Into the third period, Boston Fleet’s Susanna Tapani scored with just over nine minutes remaining of the game. Needless to say, the audience was disappointed. Anxiety in the crowd grew, hoping they could leave the arena with a hometown win.

In the last minute of the game, the Sceptres’ goalie, Raygan Kirk, stepped out of the net hoping an extra player up front would help secure another goal. Unfortunately, with 50 seconds left, Boston’s Alina Müller got away with the puck and scored on the empty net. It was a tough end to the game.

The horn blew to signify the end of the game, and the fans left the arena disappointed. Although the game didn’t go the way they had hoped, there was an excitement for the beginning of the season. There will be more games to win, more chances to make it on the jumbotron and more women’s hockey to cheer for.
